The German Bundestag has passed a new law on trade secrets

A new German law on trade secrets, called "Gesetz zum Schutz von Geschäftsgeheimnissen" (GeschGehG), was passed by the German Bundestag on March 21, 2019.

Automated Search, enhanced by PMP staff members, may find documents missed in the Search Report

In a recent publication based on a collaborative project of the Machine Learning research group of Klaus-Robert Müller at the TU Berlin and PMP, the effectiveness of full text similarity search in order to find a patent’s prior art was investigated, evaluating various state-of-the-art approaches for feature extraction and document comparison.

New quantum simulator based on superconducting qubits, developed in collaboration with PMP staff member

In another recent publication based on a collaborative project of PMP’s Sebastian Schmidt and several research institutes (JARA Institute for Quantum Information of Forschungszentrum Jülich, Institute for Quantum Informationof RWTH Aachen University, IBM Research—Zürich, Institute for Theoretical Physics of ETH Zürich), quantum simulations with superconducting qubits were investigated.

Amendments of the German Trademark Act

The Trade Mark Law Modernisation Act (Markenrechtsmodernisierungsgesetz) came into force on 14 January 2019. The aim is to transpose all mandatory and also a large number of optional provisions of the EU Trade Mark Directive 2015/2436 of 16 December 2015 (TMD) into German law. The current amendments contain some significant changes to German trade mark law. We want to give an overview about the most important aspects.

United Kingdom will become a "third country"

As the United Kingdom on March 29, 2017 submitted its notification that the UK intends to withdraw from the European Union ("Brexit"), all EU law will cease to apply to the UK from March 30, 2019, 00:00h CET. From the EU perspective the United Kingdom will then become a "third country". "All EU law" of course also includes EU rules on trademarks and Community designs, which means that subject to any transitional agreement that may be contained in a possible withdrawal agreement, the respective EU rules will no longer apply to the UK as of the withdrawal date.

Inventors and businesses applying for patent protection at the EPO and the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO) are now able to benefit from fast-track patent examination at both offices, following the entry into force of the joint Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) pilot programme.
